WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE ?

Acupuncture is a natural and effective way to treat illness
disease and pain. It is a preventative therapy that improves the
body’s innate healing abilities. Acupuncture enhances immunity
and strengthens the body’s overall function through utilizing
fine needles on the body’s surface.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE’S THEORY OF
ACUPUNCTURE

The basic theory of acupuncture is that the body has an energy
force running through it called qi. Qi travels throughout the
body along special paired pathways called meridians or
channels, which are identical on either side of the body.

The acupuncture points are at specific locations where the
meridians come to the surface of the skin. A meridian
dysfunction is seen as a precursor to organ pathology, and can
be detected by subtle signs in one’s pulse, observation of the
patient, physical examination and other signs and symptoms.

WESTERN THEORIES OF ACUPUNCTURE

1. The "Augmentation of Immunity theory"-acupuncture raises
levels of specific hormones, white blood cell counts, and anti-
body levels.
2. The "Endorphin theory"- acupuncture stimulates the
secretions of endorphins in the body, which create a feeling of
well being.
3 .The "Neurotransmitter theory"- acupuncture affects the
production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, adrenalin
and dopamine which affect physiological processes.
4. The "Circulatory theory"- acupuncture has the effect of
constricting or dilating blood vessels which may be caused by
the body’s release of histamine, a vasodilator.

There are many diseases that acupuncture can treat. The most
common ailments are, but not limited to: back pain, asthma,
colds, high/low blood pressure, arthritic conditions, muscle
spasms, injuries, headaches, allergic reactions, pediatric
disorders, menstrual disorders, infertility, skin problems,
digestive problems, addictions, anxiety disorders and
depression.

The number and frequency of treatments vary because each
patient’s health, constitution and response to treatment are
unique. Other treatments which may be used in conjunction
with an acupuncture session include:  acupressure, ear
acupuncture ,diet/nutritional therapy, herbal therapy and
moxabustion- a warming therapy.

NEEDLES

Acupuncture needles vary in length, width and shape. Needles
are disposable and are discarded after each use in accordance
with medical biohazard regulations and guide lines.

CHINESE HERBAL THERAPY

Chinese herbology was developed more than 4000 years ago
and is presented as raw herbs, tinctures, pills or capsules.
These are prescribed to treat the root cause of illness, rather
than used to suppress symptoms. They seldom weaken the
system or produce side effects.

Herbs can strengthen individual organs, thereby enhancing the
immune system and restoring Qi. They are often prescribedfor
prevention. In order to prescribe an herbal formula, herbalists
draw on ancient formulas from texts and will adjust them as
needed. Herbs can be prescribed for a couple of days to a
couple ofyears based on the pathology. Frequent adjustments
may be needed as the patient progresses.
